A Glamorous Dressing Room

Absolutely loving this beautifully organized dressing room from the home of Rita Hazan:

Dream Dressing Room

So much to love about this walk-in closet: the custom built-in wardrobes painted a lovely grey, the floor to ceiling window that allows for abundant natural light, the glamorous chandelier, drapery and seating...

...as well as the little details like the beautiful crystal knobs and built-in natural oak drawer dividers.

Adding this one to my dream home inspiration file!

How Jocelyn Organizes Her Closet

This week's guest participating in the 'How I Organize' series is graphic designer Jocelyn of The Stylish Type, who makes and sells pretty decor prints on Etsy and frequently shares her uber stylish outfits on her blog. She gives us a peek inside her home and shares with us her beautifully organized closet:

My closet is small and far from the walk-in-closet I would one day like to own. For this reason, I have to be creative with how I organized it and take advantage of every square foot of space I’ve got. That’s where closet storage solutions come in handy. I’m all about using extra hanging rods, shelves, bins, special hangers, and anything else you can get your hands on to make your closet functional. One of my biggest pet peeves is having a huge mess and not being able to see what I own. Accessibility is also important so I organize by type and then color.

My new Real Simple solutions hangers that I purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond are the best for maximizing hanging space. They are ultra-slim and have a built in hook feature that can be used to stack clothing or hang accessories like scarves and belts. Utilizing these babies to their full potential could ultimately give me double the closet space. A belt loop hanger is also a good investment to keep belts organized and visible.

I own a lot of coats for those chilly San Francisco days so I used an extra closet rod to take advantage of the lost space under my tops and skirts. I purchased some stackable shelves to double my shoe storage and used clear bins to store hats, scarves, and clutches. For those narrow spaces where traditional shelves won’t fit, I used an ordinary locker shelf to gain a little extra space. A basket on the floor is also a good place to store extra blankets or miscellaneous belongings.

Extra Tips:

*Use command hooks on the walls to hang hats or necklaces. They are easily to use and don’t require hammering into the wall.

*If you have a door that opens towards you, use the back and hang a shoe organizer. It’s the perfect place to store flats and flip-flops.

DIY Closet

A creative way to house a wardrobe, this DIY cabana closet was made by repurposing a bakers rack and sewing a custom cover using inexpensive striped fabric.  Looks pretty great don't you think?

How great is this walk-in closet?

Loving how everything is so perfectly folded, hung and arranged by type and color. Definitely a thing of luxury to have that much space (and that many clothes and shoes!)

Concealed Bedroom Storage

The newest issue of House Beautiful, particularly the above bedroom by designer Barry Dixon, reminded of a great space solution: built-ins surrounding the bed and hidden behind beautiful curtains.

The above bedroom is by designer Adrienne Neff.  She used California Closets custom units to create one side with hanging rods and drawers below, plus a tie rack; and the other side with shelves and vertical hanging space for dresses.  Shelves above the bed provide a space for off-season clothing.  The side storage is concealed with felt cutains suspened from a track, while the shelves above the bed are concealed with a linen-blend roman shade.  The custom headboard, the rich chocolate brown paint that matches the shelving, and the swing arm sconces, keep it from having a "living in a closet" feel.

This bedroom is by Sherry and John of Young House Love. They used  two Ikea wardrobes on either side of the bed.  One for her, one for him, each customized with drawers and rods and hidden behind white curtains hung high. A valance gives it a finished effect and makes it feel like the bed is tucked into a built-in nook.

Beautifully Organized Space of the Week

This week's beautifully organized space is this closet from the home of fellow blogger Freckles Chic:

Isn't it lovely? She created it by donating all the things she no longer wanted and were just cluttering up the space, and by designating a place for everything that remained. Total cost of the transformation was about $100 (for hangers, clips, shelves, storage containers, a hat stand, and headband holder). Proof that you don't need a ton of space or money to create a beautiful closet!

Beautifully Organized Space of the Week

It's the last one of 2010, so let's make it a fabulous one shall we?This week's beautifully organized space is from the home of fellow blogger Megan of Honey We're Home. Prior to moving into her custom built home, Megan lived in a townhouse with very limited closet space so having the opportunity to have a walk-in closet of this size was a dream come true for her.

The closet is just off the bathroom and measures 9'4 x 13'2! It was designed to include an island with cubbies in the middle, a shoe rack, built-in dresser, adjustable hanging shelves, shelves for purses, and a fabulous chandelier.

Pants are hung on wire hangers from Bed, Bath and Beyond and jeans are on small felt hangers that don’t bow in the middle. Before the shoe rack was built, Megan counted her shoes to see how much space she’d need. The top shelf was removed to fit tall boots which are kept upright used boot inserts.

Scarves are hung and tied over a lower rod. Lightweight sweaters are folded over white plastic hangers from Target and arranged by color -creates such a beautiful rainbow effect don't you think?

Megan created a necklace holder behind the door using Commandhooks. She stores her purses on the side shelves. Her dresser drawers hold gym clothes, undies, sleepwear, and more jewelry.

The full-length mirror to the left of the dresser is where she plops down to do her makeup each day.

Atop the island is a runner is from World Market, a clear bin holding her makeup from The Container Store, and a flower vase and candy jar from Home Goods. On the right side of the island, she keeps her tank tops, casual long sleeve shirts, and shorts/capri pants. On the left, storage bins from Target hold belts, bikinis, and scarves. The zebra ottoman is from Hobby Lobby.

My Closet

Remember awhile back, I mentioned I was painting my sad beige closet?

Well here's how it turned out:

It's now a lot more cheerful :)
